Fiddler on the Roof

There isn’t much more I can say about this show that I haven’t said already in previous reviews.

This is a great production, poignant and powerful, with just enough humour to keep the audience from crying throughout. Watching Andy Nyman’s Tevye’s internal struggle as he is confronted again and again by the complete and utter annihilation of his beliefs and way of life - ‘traditions’ - completely breaks my heart. And, when he accepts them for the love of his family, it is touching and inspiring.

Having seen this show three times now, I just don’t like the way in which ‘Miracle of Miracles’ and ‘Now I Have Everything’ have been directed. I do not know if the music has been written with particular dynamics, but both songs go from being sung so incredibly quietly that you can barely hear them, to being so loud that it affects the note quality. There isn’t much time left before this show closes at the beginning of November, but I think that it would be great if these numbers could be balanced out, as then they wouldn’t feel like the weakest parts in the show.

On that note, one of the strongest parts in the show, ‘To Life’, has become a bit of an ear worm in my house since seeing this show!
